Exposures

The photographic series of Barbara Probst’s Exposures, which she has been working on since 2000, include street scenes, close-ups, still lifes, nudes, and studio, landscape, and fashion shots. The works are made in a specific process: the artist, who was born in 1964 in Munich and lives in New York, negates the ‘one-eyed’ view of the camera in her works. Her tableaux and series, some of which consist of two, some of up to thirteen individual images, capture a moment simultaneously from different camera positions linked by a radio wave-controlled trigger mechanism. The series, which currently comprises around 180 works, counteracts basic parameters of perception: people can only perceive a situation from one point of view, as they can never be in more than one place at the same time. They can only adopt different perspectives at different moments, as the sequential nature of a temporal progression can never be circumvented. The Exposures series, however, enables viewers to perceive a situation from different angles simultaneously. For Probst, this fragmentation of the moment is a means of exploring the ambiguity inherent in every photographic image.
